"Patients have many questions and are very concerned about their health and state of being, as well as treatment options. My approach with patients is to ease their worries by empathizing with their emotional hardships and providing clear and detailed explanations about treatment."

Dr. Michael O’Shea is a Thoracic Surgeon at the Saint Vincent Hospital-Worcester Medical Center location of Saint Vincent Medical Group in Worcester. As a Thoracic Surgeon, he treats patients with chest-related issues requiring surgery. Dr. O’Shea also works closely with physical therapists and other medical specialties, such as rehabilitation medicine, to coordinate care for his patients and address health issues related to Thoracic Surgery on a comprehensive level.

Focusing on addressing the immediate problem first, Dr. O’Shea then refers patients to the next team of specialists or medical professionals they need in order to attain their best possible health. “Often times, when patients have health issues that require thoracic surgery, there are a whole host of other detrimental health effects at play. By following up their treatment with other health resources, they receive care that will help to improve their quality of life.”

Medical innovations in the field of thoracic surgery have allowed surgeons to work to address patients’ medical needs with methods that reduce recovery time and increase procedural ease. “Minimally invasive thoracic surgery and CyberKnife® treatment (robotic cardiac surgery) for thoracic cancers are two of the surgical advances I’m able to offer patients to lessen the strain of undergoing a medical procedure by reducing the bodily impact and patient recovery time.”

A board-certified Thoracic Surgeon, Dr. O’Shea is the Director of both the Lung Cancer Center and the Division of Thoracic Surgery at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts. He completed his residency in the University of Massachusetts Medical School Surgical Residency Training Program in Worcester, Massachusetts and a fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, followed by a residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Toronto, Canada.  Dr. O’Shea is a graduate of the National University of Ireland in Cork, Ireland, where he received his medical degree.
