"I want my patients to really believe in what we’re doing. We are fighting a common enemy—cancer—as a team. To fight that enemy, it’s important that I address not only their physical health, but also their mental well being. I am their cheerleader."
Dr. Mark J. Brenner is Chief of Radiation Oncology at the Cancer Wellness Center of Saint Vincent Medical Group. Radiation Oncology at Saint Vincent incorporates the most up-to-date medical advancements, including the CyberKnife®program—robotic “surgery without the scalpel” that Dr. Brenner has used to treat over 500 patients.
According to Dr. Brenner, the technical aspects of Radiation Oncology are only part of the equation. His approach to treatment is a collaborative effort with his patients. “Treatment is something we do together. I often tell a patient ‘you’re not checking out on my shift,’ and what I’m trying to get across is that we’re in this together.” He also believes that it is important that his patients continue to live their lives to the fullest. “Patients need to take care of themselves by finding the things that make them spiritually and emotionally well and continue to pursue them throughout their medical treatments and beyond.”
Dr. Brenner is board-certified in Radiation Oncology. He is also past chairman of the American College of Radiology accreditation program in Radiation Oncology, and has been an accreditation surveyor for over 20 years. Prior to joining Saint Vincent Medical Group, he was Chief of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Maryland for nearly two decades, and also served as Medical Director of their CyberKnife® center.
Dr. Brenner grew up in Brookline, Massachusetts. Following an internship in internal medicine at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston, Dr. Brenner completed his residency and fellowship at the Harvard Joint Center for Radiation Therapy in Boston. He was the fifth member of the Brenner family to receive his medical degree from Tufts University.
