Minimally Invasive Breast Biopsy

The skilled and caring physicians at Saint Vincent Medical Group can provide our patients with a minimally invasive breast biopsy in Worcester and central Massachusetts when it is needed. These procedures are used to provide your physician with more information about a breast lump or abnormality so that they can make an accurate diagnosis and provide effective treatment.

A minimally invasive breast biopsy can be performed using ultrasound technology or MRI. These techniques help the radiologist locate the area of concern and remove a tissue sample. Types of minimally invasive breast biopsies include:

  • MRI-Guided Breast Biopsy: A powerful magnetic field, radio waves, and a computer are used to locate the breast lump or abnormality and guide a needle to the area, which is used to remove a tissue sample for examination under a microscope. This procedure does not use ionizing radiation, and leaves little, if any, scarring.
  • Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy: This minimally invasive procedure uses ultrasound waves to locate a breast lump or abnormality so that a core needle can be used to remove tissue from the area of concern so that it can be examined. As with an MRI-guided biopsy, this procedure does not use ionizing radiation, and leaves little to no scarring.
  • Core Needle Breast Biopsy: This procedure is performed by the doctor feeling for the area of concern and then taking the biopsy. A hollow needle is used to remove a tissue sample or multiple samples, which are then examined under a microscope. Stitches are not needed following this procedure, and it typically does not leave a scar.
  • Stereotactic Breast Biopsy: This procedure uses digital mammogram technology to locate a breast lump or abnormality and remove a tissue sample. It can be especially effective when evaluating calcium deposits or tiny masses that are not visible on ultrasound. Using X-rays to guide the radiologist, a small section of suspicious tissue can be removed with pinpoint accuracy so that it can be examined. No stitches are required following this minimally invasive procedure, and it will cause little to no scarring.
